It is simply on the wind up it actually starts to falter, nevertheless the smack-upwards finale rescues it on ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you may wisely dialogued, it’ll have zero higher difficulty into the living down its incredibly ugly title.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said “The movie movements during the a simple pace, the talk is smooth and you can characterisations generally productive. Richard Brody regarding Brand new Yorker indexed “It terse and you will taut flick noir are predicated on new intimate and you may professional problems of one’s term reputation, the latest criminal genius (played by the Dick Powell) trailing a chic unlawful local casino. The newest film’s author and you will manager, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess video game, to possess mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) spent some time working within gambling establishment and you may dated a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh cast’s suavely managed body gestures off love and you may threat, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can smartly cocky pictures (together with his political conscience) make this pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle a hidden vintage of category.” [ 10 ]

Photo have motion and suspense, and you may certain brief matches of jokes to add flavor. Adept activities by Manhood Powell, because the a gaming household overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, as well as within the get . Whilst spot uses a familiar trend, the new characterizations are new in addition to activities good enough in order to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and topical, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touch. Strange camera bases come along now and then so you can heighten interest and you may temporarily stop the eye. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling since the director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, brand new author and you will associate music producer, and supports making it a soft design.” [ eleven ]

It is generally a point of watching Mr. Powell proceed through his paces stylishly if you find yourself a big cast out-of stars and you may actresses provide him standard assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good little lady whom brings about the newest best in him and Ellen Received ‘s the sleek and you will slinky vixen which becomes your into jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty as villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do another in a position journey because a weary cops inspector whom in the end closes possible. Significant amounts of sipping and you may puffing is accomplished from the most of the alarmed.” [ twelve ]
